Mother’s Day is this weekend! Are you ready to make your mom feel special? How about helping your kids celebrate their mom? Motherhood is the toughest yet most rewarding job on the planet, so celebrate her in style this year.
Mother’s Day originated in the early 1900’s when Anna Jarvis’s efforts to recognize motherhood took hold in local communities and eventually nationwide. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day and soon the rest of the world joined in the celebration. Now, Mother’s Day is a thriving $14 billion per year industry, with florists and restaurants seeing their biggest revenues surrounding this special day.
While most moms appreciate cards and gifts, acts of service just might go over even better. Mothers are constantly doing things for their families – cooking, cleaning, helping, etc. – so whatever you can do to help her is sure to make her happy. Ideas include, but are not limited to cooking meals (even making extras to freeze!); doing laundry; washing her car; cleaning and vacuuming; picking up the dry cleaning; caring for pets and animals; grocery shopping; emptying the clean dishwasher; and changing bedsheets. Just think about what Mom does on a typical day, and step in and do those things for her.
The best gifts for Mom are the ones that make her feel special. What does your mother love (besides you!)? Putting a little forethought into the gift will go a long way to earn brownie points. Salon and spa packages are great gifts, too, because they allow her to relax, which is something that most mothers don’t do often enough.
Feeding her family is one of mom’s biggest and never-ending tasks, so consider getting her a meal subscription service for the gift that keeps on giving. There are many to choose from and most have a trial period to start. You can pick out some favorite dishes at first, then let mom choose what she wants to cook in the subsequent months.
Most importantly, take the time to tell your mom how much she means to you and speak from the heart. Lots of hugs and kisses along with loads of appreciation will really make Mom feel special on her special day.
