Are you Houston Rodeo ready?! Coming up in just a few days, the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo kicks off with Trail Rides and the Rodeo Parade beginning the weekend of February 22. Here’s what you need to know in order to be rodeo ready!
Trail Rides are a tradition dating back to the 1950’s when horseback riders travelled around to raise awareness about the rodeo events. Nowadays, the trail rides are a big attraction in neighborhoods all around Houston, with riders coming through Montgomery on the Sam Houston Trail Ride and Magnolia on the Texas Cattlemen’s Trail Ride (click links to view their daily schedule). Be sure to cheer them on as they go past!
The rodeo itself is an experience that anyone can enjoy, from young children on up. Daily family activities include a petting zoo, pig races, milking demonstration center, pony and camel rides, and many, many others. Don’t miss the birthing center where you’ll see brand-newborn baby animals. Baby chicks hatch every few minutes at the hatchery. The indoor arena hosts animal showings and smaller rodeo events, so be sure to check out the schedule when you arrive.
The carnival in the NRG Stadium parking lot has hundreds of rides, games, and delicious carnival foods like funnel cake, turkey legs and deep-fried anything (try the Oreos!). While your rodeo ticket will gain you entrance to the carnival, tickets must be purchased separately for the rides and games themselves.
The AGventure exhibit is a place to learn about life on a farm, how different animals are important to Texas agriculture, where that glass of milk really comes from, and how bees make honey. Learn about farming and plant some seeds with your kids to take home. Stroll through the rabbit exhibit and see the many different variations within this species. Stop in the shops to pick up a 10-gallon hat and some nice, shiny boots so you’ll look the part.
And finally, pick up tickets to see your favorite musical performers – the lineup this year is incredible! From Go Tejano Day to hip hop to good ‘ol country music, there’s something for everyone. Arrive early to enjoy all the rodeo events that precede the concert, like the calf scramble, wagon racing, bull riding and more.
Once you experience the Houston Rodeo, you can really call yourself a true Texan!
