There are innumerable reasons why living in The Woodlands is so great, but the opportunity to be so close to both a major metropolitan area and the quiet of the countryside has got to be near the top of the list. Just a short 20-minute drive up I-45 North, you’ll find Lake Conroe, a place for tranquil relaxing in nature on its waters and along the shores. This man-made lake covers 21,000 acres in Montgomery and Walker counties. Known for its clear, fresh water, the lake is a popular destination for sailors, jet skiers, and fishermen.
Lake Conroe was completed in 1973 and was initially built to serve as an alternate water supply for the city of Houston. Since then, several resorts and large communities have been developed around the lake, bringing revenue and resources to the area, but also using up the area’s groundwater sources. Therefore, the lake now supplements the water supply for Montgomery County.
The fishing on Lake Conroe is excellent, with a vast supply of catfish, bluegill, largemouth bass and crappie. With several places to launch your boat and marina slips available, it is easy to get out on the water. If you don’t have your own boat, book a day with one of the lake’s licensed fishing guides or check out some of the available daily boat rentals. Several marinas have gas for purchase right on the water.
Popular water sports on Lake Conroe include jet skiing, water skiing, wake boarding, and paddle boarding. Many people bring large inflatable rafts to relax on while soaking up the sun. If you’re heading up to the lake for the day, try visiting Lake Conroe Park off of West Davis Street in Conroe. It has two fishing piers, two swimming areas, picnic tables, volleyball courts and a playground. Alternatively, Sam Houston National Forest has lake access as well as campsites available along with hiking and biking trails, offering an alternative to water play.
The main resort located alongside the lake is La Torretta Lake Resort & Spa – a luxury destination complete with a water park, golf course, spa, tennis courts, and of course, watersports on the lake. They offer a complimentary round of golf with some weekend stay packages and discounted rates for Montgomery County residents.
So get out and enjoy nature this summer with a day on the lake!
